Since using it I have had NO requests for a "more modern" forum solution - and my users are above average tech savvy...
I do like Flarum, it's the only alternative I actually built a live board with, but after a time I concluded it loses its appeal when your community is becoming large - it's more like a slack you own, if that makes sense.
