Thank you all and apologies for the late reply. I was on a business trip and had no time to look into it.
@thecoalman - I don't see any errors in the log, nothing from the last months anyway. I am using my own SMTP and I don't even see phpbb even trying to open the smtp port, it sometimes does, but not for password recoveries.
